SERA Connects: What should ITE be about and what should it hope to achieve?

Introduction

In the third #SERAConnects event, we learn more about the work of the Teacher Education Network. In this seminar Dr Paul Adams (University of Strathclyde) and Dr Amy Burns (University of Calgary) will explore the question: What should ITE be about and what should it hope to achieve?

When debating Initial Teacher Education, there is both a need to consider what is currently undertaken (the descriptive) as well as the purposes behind the process (the normative). At one level,, there is a need to respond to workforce planning and ‘get students through’. On the other hand, there is a need to ensure, as far as is possible, that those who exit ITE do so in a manner becoming of the profession. But this ‘becoming’ is rather difficult to identify. For example, do we want teachers who can hit the ground running, or do we want teachers with potential who will continue to grow and develop? What we seek to do in this presentation is open up debate about what ITE should be about, (given that time is often very limited, and universities, schools and local authorities have defined outcomes to meet), and what ITE should seek to achieve. Using examples from Canada and Scotland we want to encourage debate about the purposes of ITE in relation to immediate and future need.
